I was just doing my job when they attacked me...
The two white men spotted the work crew on the side of the road in the Northern California foothills, stopped their truck and began yelling “get out of our country you f*in illegals”. My client was Spanish speaking and Latino. He also happened to be a 20 something, U.S. born, American citizen.
He was working on a tree trimming crew on a rural road when the men approached. “It’s not safe close to the wood chipping machine, so I was telling them in english to leave when they attacked me.” Sitting in my office, he spoke to me in broken, but perfectly fine English.
He was assaulted and beaten with a pole and now suffers serious physical injuries and unspeakable emotional trauma. Thankfully, the perpetrators were caught by law enforcement, prosecuted, and jailed. Sadly, the physical and mental toll remains.
In decades of practice, the last few years I’ve seen the most racial incidents against clients of color. These crimes of hate are a sobering reminder that bigots still exist in our society.
Latino workers and others often pay the dramatic price. We as a society have to deal with the aftermath.
Representing injured workers since 1996.
