The bench

I’ve spent the better part of a 26 year legal career appearing in court with a Latino client in front of non Latino judges.  Throughout that career,  tribunals have been mostly fair and impartial in the decisions they’ve given my clients.  We almost always win our cases, and jurists routinely listen to my client’s testimony, (often through a Spanish interpreter), find their statements credible and rule in their favor.   Borrego law boasts a winning litigation record in a state where almost 40% of the population is Latino but only about 10% of all judges are Latino.

Given these career statistics, does a more diverse bench really matter?

Absolutely.

At it’s most fundamental level, our courts work when people of all backgrounds trust that they will get a fair shot at proving and winning their case.  California’s rich diversity requires a justice system that is as accessible and free of bias as possible. Diversity on the bench increases public trust, confidence and the appearance of fairness in the court system, and therefore increases access for all.  When everyone, no matter their color, language, or immigration status can access the legal system’s protections and assert their rights, that is true justice!
