Choose your attorney wisely
It's all over radio and television. "We'll defend you're rights. We have a team of attorneys ready to fight for you!"
Fast forward 6 months to a year, a new client is in my office telling me their story:
"I called the number on the screen and they took my info. They sent someone out to my house and I signed documents of legal representation. And I never heard from them again......."
We're seeing clients in our office lately with this same story. They fall for slick ads and get sucked into a mega advertising scheme where they think they are hiring good attorneys. They never meet the lawyer, who operates somewhere on the other side of the state. After the initial sign up docs, little to nothing is ever done to move their matter forward. At times, they blow important rights and miss critical deadlines.
Just like in every profession, there are always some poor practitioners and misleading advertising campaigns. So what can you do to avoid future problems when hiring an attorney?
- Ask your friends, co-workers, family members for referrals. There is no better measure of a legal success than a past client who refers someone they know!
- Meet the Attorney in person. If the lawyer is too busy to shake your hand and discuss your legal issue with you, what makes you think she'll have time to return your phone call later? You have a right to know who is working for you on your case. Exercise it.
- Ask about the office communication policy before you sign a legal retainer. How can I have my questions answered? What are the office phone hours? Do you respond to e-mail?
- Finally, make sure that the Attorney you hire has an office where you live. It's your case, schedule an occasional appointment or phone call with your Lawyer just to see where things stand.
