Trade offs
Life is about them. You sacrifice here to gain there. For many young people, chief among these decisions is whether to assume debt for a college degree at a time when the price tag is higher then ever.
After decades of reviewing the income of thousands of clients as a Workers Compensation lawyer, I have come to an undeniable conclusion. Many workers in trades that do not require a college degree ( construction, mechanics, AC technicians, etc) do just as well, if not better, than their college educated counterparts without the debt burden.
Just this week, I spoke to a construction framer who makes 7000$ per month. Yes, it’s hard work and requires overtime, but he is making a nice living for a young man of 30 years old. Another client who works as an equipment technician at a hospital makes 100K plus per year after attending a 1 year training and investing a few years in her craft. I see it daily, workers in health care, sales, technology, and more, earning salaries equal to many college educated workers with little to no debt.
Don’t get me wrong, a university degree is still a good path towards a comfortable life for many people. It is just no longer the only path.
I counsel all young people to weigh their course of college study carefully. Will their course of study pay off in the long run ? Will the trade off of debt for school lead to a higher pay in the future?
It’s a pivotal decision that will decide the kind of life that they lead.
