Stuff

After the loss of a loved one we often find ourselves the wardens of their stuff.

We collect it our whole lives.  It fills closets, drawers, garages, and spare rooms.  We house it, organize it, and oftentimes forget we even had it.  And yes, the life long body of furnishings tells a lot about a person. For me it also illustrates a very important lesson.

We would like to think that our things our special.  That the old collection of 80’s hair band CD’s or our colorful shot glasses from around the world will be treasured by our family for eternity.

The reality is they most likely will not.

Instead those who miss us will talk about the memories we made together.  The storm at the beach where we ran into the ocean as lightning clapped around us,  nights we danced until our feet hurt and our bodies were soaked in sweat, that day spent in the ER hoping it would be ok,the embarrassing event that we all laughed about for years afterwards, when we stepped up to help a neighbor in distress and saved the day, or watching together in awe at a sunset over the mountains.

Life isn’t about stuff, it’s about time spent with people we love. Don’t miss it.
