It depends..

Interacting with other attorneys on a daily basis, I hear a lot of lawyerspeak.  Turns of phrase, colloquialisms, and verbal cues that are a sure giveaway that the person I’m talking to has a J.D. behind their name.    Here’s a few sure fire tips for spotting an officer of the court without their ever mentioning what they do:

-throws in Latin phrases in everyday discussion like “modus operandi” to describe a pattern of behavior in casual conversation.

-Says “Let me do some digging and circle back..”

-deposes friends in casual conversation by asking leading questions; “isn’t it true that you....”

-begins criticism with “respectfully”

-will argue for and than against an issue without batting an eye.

-uses the word “continue” when wanting to change a date or an appointment.

-says I’ll “appear” instead of I’ll be there

-impeaches friends with prior inconsistent statements; “last week you said.....”

-proclaims “objection, nonresponsive!” Mid discussion

-points out the liability in any wonky situation (and also uses the word wonky)

-ruins any law show with pithy commentary on how unrealistic the legal logic and process is.

-sends an email to “memorialize” a conversation

-proclaims “allegedly” after a controversial statement

-and of course, answers most questions with the good old lawyer maxim........”It depends.”
