Summertime Lessons

In the summer as a kid, my Father would take me and my brother out to pick grapes in the fields surrounding our Central Valley home. Sunup to sundown bent over in the oppressive summer heat.  Back aching, sweat caked fingers sliced by the vines and cutting knife.  Stinging with dirt and grape juice.   "Stay in school and study hard" he would say.

Today I sit on my butt all day.  The heaviest thing I lift is a file; my mind immersed in my cases.  Sometimes I hear my Dad's voice from that dusty vineyard of my youth;  "it's your back or your brains; choose wisely.........."
